Magic Analysis - JK Rowling vs Tolkien and CS Lewis

When developing an imaginary fantasy world, magic becomes an essential part of the lore that is to be approached with much caution and discernment. My own personal project, Insignia, is no exception.

Growing up watching Disney movies and playing japanese RPG games such as Final Fantasy and Tales of Eternia, I've always wondered, what is it that makes magic in some fictions appear to be okay while in others, magic could seems to be so occultic? How come nobody (or very few at least) ever suspected the Cinderella's Fairy Godmother of being evil, where as Harry is immediately put in the hot seat?

In pursuit of answers, I found this article on the internet that helped shed some light on the matter:

The 7 hedges mentioned in the article, helped me to understand why Tolkien and Lewis' books, although having incorporating magic in it, resulted in a very different atmosphere compared to J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter.

I plan on using these 7 points as a supplementary guide to shape Insignia's magic lore.

Make up!

This has got to be the creepiest woman I've seen on YouTube.

Parody vers.

This video has sudden outbursts of loud volume. I wouldn't recommend using a headphone.
But some parts I found funny. Some parts are just bizarre.

God is Asking You Out on a Date

I was browsing the internet on, "Does God enjoy spending time with me?" and I stumbled upon this article. I thought I'd share it C:

God is Asking You Out on a Date

Scripture: "I am my beloved's, and His desire is for me." Song of Solomon 7:10

My Secret

I want to tell you a secret. One that has totally revolutionized my life with God. Can I have a minute of your time and see if it could do the same for you?

Wanting More from God

About a couple months ago, I was at a weird place in my relationship with God, and I asked Him what to do. I wanted more out of our relationship, but I didn't know what to do about it. And here's the answer I felt He gave me: Go on walks. Go on walks? Are You serious? What is that going to do? Are You saying I'm out of shape? (Which I am.) In any event, I went, out of sheer obedience and curiosity—and I kind of like walking. Every day after work, I'd put on my walking shoes and head out the door, often tired and not feeling like it.

Going on Dates

And what do you know, but as I started to walk, I started to talk: to God—about my feelings, my fears, what happened yesterday at work, how I feel about my life...everything and anything that was on my heart. And do you want to know what's more? As I began to walk—everyday, after work—I began to hear God talk back...or sometimes just feel Him listen and care. It was like I began to "date" God. And God, smart as He is, knew this would happen. He knew that it was quality time that we needed to grow in our relationship together.

A Fresh Love

Have you ever seen a married couple that falls out of love? It's not that they hate each other; they just lost that "thing." But then, in a move of desperation, they move everything else to the side and begin to act how they did when they first fell in love. They date; they open up; they notice new, wonderful qualities in each other. They listen to every word with attention. They put each other first. Mainly, they spend time together.

God's Message to You

And this is EXACTLY what God wants to do...with you. He is just crazy about you. He wants to spend every waking moment with you: listening to your fears, talking about your dreams, laughing at funny things, and counseling you on the tough issues. Don't believe me? Listen to Him here; He's talking about you:
"“But then I will win her back once again. I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her there. I will return her vineyards to her and transform the Valley of Trouble into a gateway of hope. She will give herself to Me there, as she did long ago when she was young, when I freed her from her captivity in Egypt. When that day comes,' says the Lord, “you will call Me ‘my husband’ instead of ‘my master'" (Hosea 2:14-16).

No Matter How Old or New

No matter where you are at in your relationship with God (maybe you've just begun, or maybe you've been with Him a while now), He wants to pursue you all over again. He wants you to give yourself to Him again. When I started taking my daily walks with God, our daily dates, I started to hear Him and feel His love in a revolutionary way. I started to hear Him soothe my fears, give me advice, and care for me with deep loyalty. And the same will happen for you if you start spending time with Him.

The Offer

Here's what Jesus says to you: "Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends." Revelation 3:20 Do you want to have those dates with God? Do you want to let Him into your home...maybe for the first time, or maybe "all over again?"

Start Here

Why don't you simply start with picking a time of day to take a daily date with God? It could be morning, noon, or night. You just tell Him, "God, I would like to go on that date You're offering me. I'm a little surprised You'd want to spend so much time with me, but I'm honored. Let's build this relationship." Is that what you want to do? If so, why don't you tell God that you'd like to spend together, and then take that time to talk and get to know each other this week. I personally promise you that you will not regret it. God is crazy about you, and spending time together every day will revolutionize your life.

VISION

A video I found on youtube that I enjoyed watching. I think there were clips from games and such, so I assumed it was home-made. Still I find it entertaining to listen to while I was working at home.

Warning: Visions are only to be considered as straw, not grain.

Our main guide should always be the Word of God (Holy Bible), not visions. Visions only act as a sweet foretaste, and is unfortunately vulnerable to satan's distortion, for he too can bestow false visions on to mankind.

Watch this video as a means to seek God even more, a mere side-dish to increase your appetite for the main course, nothing more. Do not make this as your main guide or a substitute for the Bible, for nothing outside of the Bible can measure up to it.

Porn & Sex Appeal

Incorporating sex appeal into your work to gain popularity is like using drugs. Use it to gather fans and followers and you will soon realize that the only way you can keep them that way is if you keep drawing more and more porn.

And by sex appeal, I don't mean like the artworks from the Renaissance Ages, where society still had a very different view on things. I mean lust inducing art pieces that are largely influenced by Japanese hentai(s) and the like (I used the term "lust inducing" because people nowadays have all sorts of made up labels for porn).

To artist that are aspiring to be serious and professional in their craft. I urge you to never use "lust" as a way to boost your reputation. Again, like drugs, it will only poison your reputation. No matter whether you have a thousand aliases on the internet, it will show and backfire against you one day. Remember... the internet never forgets.

"And He said to His disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin." - Luke 17:1-2

Beware! God takes it very personally when people cause His loved ones to sin.

Calvin and Hobbes on Life

"For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry."

INSIGNIA Teaser - Behind The Scenes

Oh hey, I forgot that I had some materials on YouTube that I haven't shared yet, so here they are.
I've uploaded the step-by-step Animation Process and the Animatics to the animated trailer I made for my college final project.
But first, here's another look of the finished version.

INSIGNIA Teaser Trailer
It's fun to watch this side-by-side with the Animatics.

Animatics
The images I used in the Animatics here were the final draft taken from the storyboard. As you can see there are quite a number changes that I made, from backgrounds to camera angles. There are some really cool shots, but they didn't made the cut because some of them interrupted the flow of the trailer. Regardless, I think they were some epic shots.

Animation Process
Some of you may already be familiar with how I do illustrations. This is more or less the moving version of my WIP progressions. It's still a fun thing to watch tho. You can see my Illustration WIP for a more in-depth view of how I do illustrations.

Real Talent

A real talented person doesn't need cheap costumes, flashy effects, or fancy stages.
All they need to bring is themselves.

It's amazing how she changes the atmosphere of the entire studio with just a few gestures and a couple of sentence. Notice that she also got into her character within seconds.

Talented people hardly need a expensive props to aid them.

I laugh at the concerts of pop musicians nowadays who sound way worse than their recordings.
Now this is what I call a performance.

Our Church finally has a permanent building!

To my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ all over the world. Praise be to God.

It is my great pleasure to report to you that another Church in Indonesia has been completed. Today, on the 3rd of November 2013, the Indonesian Christian Church (GKI, originally: Gereja Kristen Indonesia) in Cinere, in the city of Depok, the province of Jawa Barat, celebrates its birthday for the first time in a real church building.

As you might have heard, Indonesia has the largest Islamic population in the world. Getting the license to build a Church is near impossible here due to the intense pressure from the majority. Churches being burned down is not a surprising news to us anymore.

After years and years of persecution and hardships, God has finally blessed GKI Cinere with a permanent building. Beginning at an outpost over 23 years ago, then joining a local Christian school, then a rented store, then using a temporary building, and today a building we could finally call our own. We once could house a few dozen people, but now we can house over a hundred.

I've been called to write this to encourage other members of Christ around the world that the gospel is still being preached even in the most densely populated Islamic country.

May the gospel be preached through out the earth.
May we keep persevering in our faith until the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Praise and glory be to God forever and ever. Maranatha. Amen.
